Creating a will online is straightforward when you break it down into manageable steps. Online wills are completely legal in England and Wales. Here's how the process works with Make a Will.
Step 1: Gather your information
Before you start, it helps to understand what your will should include and have the following to hand:
- Full names and addresses of your beneficiaries (the people you want to inherit)
- Details of anyone you'd like to appoint as executor
- If you have children under 18, think about who you'd want as their guardian
- A rough idea of what you own - property, savings, investments
- Any specific gifts you'd like to make (particular items to particular people)
Step 2: Complete the questionnaire
Our guided questionnaire takes you through all the important decisions. It's written in plain English - no legal jargon. Most people complete it in 15-20 minutes. You can save your progress and return later if needed.
Step 3: Review your draft will
Once you've answered all the questions, we generate your draft will. You can review it online and make any changes before it goes for checking.
Step 4: Solicitor review
Every will is reviewed by a qualified solicitor. Learn more about solicitor-checked wills. They check for errors, ambiguities, and potential problems. If they spot any issues, they'll contact you to discuss them. This usually takes 2-3 working days.
Step 5: Sign and witness
Once approved, we send you your will to print and sign. You'll need two witnesses present when you sign - they must both watch you sign and then sign the will themselves. We provide clear instructions to make sure this is done correctly.
What happens next?
Store your signed will somewhere safe and tell your executors where it is. You can update your will at any time through your account - lifetime updates are free for your first year, then a low annual subscription (see our pricing guide).
