Administering an estate requires dealing with numerous organisations. If you haven't already, you may need to apply for probate. Here's a directory of useful contacts and what you'll need to do.

Government services

  • Tell Us Once service: Report a death once and government departments are notified automatically. Available through the registrar when you register the death.
  • HMRC: For income tax, inheritance tax, and any tax refunds due to the estate
  • DWP: To stop benefits and report any overpayments
  • DVLA: To cancel driving licence and transfer vehicle ownership
  • Passport Office: To cancel passport

Financial institutions

You'll need to contact all banks, building societies, and financial providers. Most have bereavement teams who can help. Have ready:

  • Death certificate (original or certified copy)
  • Grant of probate (once you have it)
  • Your ID as executor
  • The will or letters of administration

Property matters

  • HM Land Registry: To transfer or sell property
  • Council tax: To close account or transfer
  • Utility companies: Gas, electricity, water, broadband
  • Insurance: Buildings and contents - don't let cover lapse on empty properties

Other organisations to notify

  • Employer or pension provider
  • Private pension companies
  • Insurance companies (life insurance, health insurance)
  • Subscription services
  • Memberships and clubs
  • Professional bodies

Digital assets

Don't forget online accounts:

  • Email providers
  • Social media accounts
  • Online shopping accounts
  • Cloud storage
  • Cryptocurrency (if any)
