Administering an estate requires dealing with numerous organisations. If you haven't already, you may need to apply for probate. Here's a directory of useful contacts and what you'll need to do.
Government services
- Tell Us Once service: Report a death once and government departments are notified automatically. Available through the registrar when you register the death.
- HMRC: For income tax, inheritance tax, and any tax refunds due to the estate
- DWP: To stop benefits and report any overpayments
- DVLA: To cancel driving licence and transfer vehicle ownership
- Passport Office: To cancel passport
Financial institutions
You'll need to contact all banks, building societies, and financial providers. Most have bereavement teams who can help. Have ready:
- Death certificate (original or certified copy)

- Your ID as executor
- The will or letters of administration
Property matters
- HM Land Registry: To transfer or sell property
- Council tax: To close account or transfer
- Utility companies: Gas, electricity, water, broadband
- Insurance: Buildings and contents - don't let cover lapse on empty properties
